Dyno proven RenaultSport Twingo RS profiles now available from CatCams

Thanks to its lightweight compact package, superb dynamics and standard power to weight ratio of 127 Bhp per ton, the RenaultSport Twingo 133 is regarded as the finest compact hot hatch on sale in the UK at the moment. Such is the quality of its chassis that the general consensus of opinion is that it could cope with plenty more power than the factory supplies and now Belgian performance valvetrain specialist Cat Cams NV can answer that need, with a set of high performance profiles targeted at the Twingo 133 fast road / trackday market.

Carrying part number 5504701, the new Cat Cams ‘Sport’ profiles for the RenaultSport Twingo 133 are manufactured to the following technical specification:-

Dyno testing by Cat Cams’ Renault specialist partner K-Tec Racing Ltd has proven that in conjunction with an ECU remap to optimise fuelling and ignition parameters the 5504701 profiles add power and torque throughout the engine’s rev range, culminating in 12bhp and 5lb.ft at peak. Gains are particularly noticeable from 4500rpm upwards, with the Cat Cams equipped engine delivering a far more sporty performance than standard all the way up to 7000rpm making the Twingo feel like a real hot hatch!

NEW ‘SPORT’ CAM PROFILES FOR MK2 FORD FOCUS RS AND ST GAIN UP TO 40BHP!
NEW ‘SPORT’ CAM PROFILES FOR MK2 FORD FOCUS RS AND ST GAIN UP TO 40BHP!

With power outputs of 500bhp at the wheels now being possible on the 2.5-litre, 300PS turbocharged inline 5-cylinder engine found in the Mk2 Ford Focus RS (and also the Focus / Mondeo ST,) it’s no surprise that this engine is regarded as a tuner’s favourite.

And now Belgian performance valvetrain specialist Cat Cams NV has developed the ultimate cams for the Blue Oval’s flagship models a pair of performance ‘Sport’ profiles that maximise the mid-range and top end power and torque output on tuned examples of the Focus RS and Focus / Mondeo ST, whilst retaining everyday driveability. Careful design by Cat Cams means that these are the most aggressive profiles that can be used on the standard pistons.

Mindful that most Mk2 Ford Focus RS / ST and Mondeo ST customers retain the standard ECU, Cat Cams has optimised the timing to maintain the factory idle and emissions characteristics. This also ensures low-speed driveability and MOT compliance, whilst promoting rapid turbo spool up even on cars running larger, aftermarket turbochargers.

Back to back dyno testing by leading Ford tuner Devil Developments on a Stage 3 modified Focus RS (running standard injectors and turbo,) has shown that impressive gains of up to 40bhp and 36lb.ft are possible with the Cat Cams’ Sport profiles, with power and torque increases from 3000rpm to the 6500rpm limiter. Testing on a ‘Stage 4’ tuned Focus RS (with larger injectors and uprated fuel pump, plus further ECU remapping) has shown similar gains, peaking at 417bhp and 456lb.ft of torque.

Carrying part number 2395302, the new Cat Cams are manufactured to the following technical specification:-

Cat Cams launches Renault F4R finger followers for high rpm usage
Cat Cams launches Renault F4R finger followers for high rpm usage
Belgium based high performance valvetrain specialist Cat Cams NV is pleased to announce a replacement finger cam follower package for the highly popular 2.0-litre, 16-valve Renault F4R engines as used in the Clio 172 / 182 / 197 and 200 models. In standard form the original RenaultSport valvetrain limits the F4R’s power output to around 260 bhp and 7800 rpm, because the standard roller finger followers are a known weak point and are not designed for prolonged high engine speeds. Therefore Cat Cams decided to redesign the F4R’s valvetrain following extensive CAD examination of various layout options.

Cat Cams settled on using new, bespoke finger cam followers that feature sliding contact. To ensure that these followers remain aligned on the valve top, the original RenaultSport F4R hydraulic lash adjusters are replaced by Cat Cam’s solid inserts, which are connected and locked by a common shaft. This shaft also acts as the rotation axis to make it impossible for the cam follower to leave its pivot.

The exact geometry for the new sliding finger followers was determined using Cat Cams’ dedicated in-house software for detailed motion analysis, while Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software was used to optimise strength, stiffness and weight. Main target parameters included: system clearance for 15mm valve lift, and a 40mm contact diameter for the virtual equivalent bucket tappet. Finally, a default range of cam profiles was developed, again using state-of-the-art cam design software that is continuously being developed on the premises since 1998.

With the new Cat Cam’s set up, the valve clearance on the F4R motor is set using lash caps with an extra long 4mm skirt sliding over the valve tip, and dual valve springs (manufactured by PAC Racing) with lightweight steel retainers and spring seats complete the kit.

Installation of the Cat Cams F4R finger cam follower setup requires a slot be machined in the cylinder head between the spark plug hole and the cam bearing, simply to provide the required clearance for the connecting shaft.

Ken Stessens, responsible for cam design and product development, testifies from own experience: "A simple manual milling machine with tilt table, a bullnose tool and 2 hours of hassle-free labour is all it takes to install the new cam follower hardware."

Once the Cat Cams RenaultSport F4R engine finger cam follower setup is installed, the high rpm potential of the engine can be fully realised and the valvetrain ceases to be a weak link. This theoretically endows the F4R motor with 9,000 rpm / 300 bhp plus potential when built using upgraded forged crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons.

Interested parties should please contact Cat Cams UK for more information and pricing on the RenaultSport F4R finger cam follower upgrade and associated cam profiles.

Here at Cat Cams NV, we’re always looking to make things better. To improve. To go beyond standard, to deliver the performance that you desire and deserve.

Hence why Cat Cams NV is pleased to launch a set of no-compromise fast road sport profiles for the Peugeot 206 GTi 180, which uses the 1997cc EW10J4S engine.

Designed to deliver a noticeable gain in performance throughout the rev range, while retaining everyday usability, Cat Cams’ technicians have analysed the valvetrain in the 180’s VVT engine and produced a pair of camshafts that are significantly better in every respect.

Cat Cams is the only cam designer offering profiles for the 206 GTi 180. Why? Because the EW10J4S engine incorporates variable valve timing (VVT) on the inlet cam, meaning that Cat Cams NV has to produce the inlet profile from steel billet, while the exhaust cam is manufactured from a chill cast blank. This makes it relatively difficult to produce, but once again, Cat Cams has risen to the challenge!

Back to back dyno testing conducted by Peugeot specialist Pug1off at Northampton Motorsport’s chassis dyno confirmed that in conjunction with an ECU remap, the Cat Cams Sport 4901804 profiles for the 206 GTi 180 gain power and torque throughout the rev range, from just 2750 rpm upwards.

Peak power increases by 14 bhp at 7250 rpm, with gains of 17-18 bhp over standard between 6000-7000 rpm. Even at just 3000 rpm the Cat Cams pick up over 10 bhp, highlighting the road friendly nature of the cams design.

Crucially, for a fast road cam profile, the 206 GTi 180’s torque curve transformed too by Cat Cams work, with gains of 20 lb.ft at 3250 rpm and a peak gain of 10 lb.ft. But the numbers only tell half the story, as the shape of the torque curve is transformed, making the engine feel much more eager, particularly at high revs.

The Cat Cams Peugeot 206 GTi 180 ‘Sport’ cam profiles carry the following technical specification:-

The Cat Cams 4901804 profiles are priced at £527.12 excluding VAT and are available now, from all Cat Cams dealers including Pug1off.

Please note: owners of the Citroen C4 VTS seeking extra performance can also benefit from fitting the Cat Cams 4901804 profiles as these cars also run the EW10J4S engine.

Dyno proven to gain 72 bhp and 38 lb.ft of torque
Runs on stock lash adjusters but requires Cat Cams / PAC valvesprings and retainers, plus pocketed pistons
Belgian automotive valvetrain specialist Cat Cams NV is delighted to announce a significant new product release a pair of performance cams for VAG’s, four-cylinder, 2.0-litre TFSI direct injection turbocharged engine, as used in the VW Golf GTi, Scirocco and the Audi A3.

Producing a pair of cams for VAG’s TFSI engine presented Cat Cams with numerous technical challenges, largely because of the trapezoid shaped lobe that’s required at the end of the inlet cam to drive the engine’s direct injection fuel pump. Produced from top quality steel billets, the end results of Cat Cam’s development process is a pair of cams that are compatible with the original VAG TFSI direct injection system.

The first VAG 2.0 TFSI profile released by Cat Cams is designed to be used on highly tuned versions of the engine – described as a ‘Stage 3’ engine profile.

Carrying part number 7602002, technical details on the Cat Cams TFSI ‘Stage 3’ profiles are as follows:-

Part no Duration Duration Max Valve Lift Description
@ 0.1 mm+cl @ 1.0 mm+cl
Standard 231 / 258° 190 / 211° 10.75 / 10.00 mm OEM
7602002 270 / 223° 223 / 215° 11.75 / 11.00 mm Stage 3

The ‘Stage 3’ Cat Cams 7602002 profiles are designed to run with the standard VAG lash adjusters, but PAC-D99864 dual valvesprings are required, as are upper and lower retainers (part numbers 99423 / 99503 respectively.) In addition, the additional valve lift means that pocketed pistons must be used, forged JE Pistons are available from Cat Cams to suit.

Before and after dyno testing has proven that the Cat Cams 7602002 ‘Stage 3’ profiles adds a stunning 72 bhp and 38 lb.ft of torque to suitably modified engines (see before and after dyno curves.) The specification of the test car was as follows:-

Scirocco R, 2.0-litre TFSI, 90mm induction kit, large alloy intercooler, Garrett HTA3076R turbo running 1.67 bar of boost, custom exhaust manifold, forged pocketed pistons, RS4 fuel injectors, Cat Cams 7602002 profiles, PAC-D99864 dual valve springs, 99423 / 99503 upper & lower retainers

Priced at £827.20 excluding taxes, the Cat Cams 7602002 ‘Stage 3’ profiles for highly tuned versions of the VAG 2.0-litre TFSI engine are on sale now. Further versions of the Cat Cams for milder specification 2.0-litre TFSI engines are currently undergoing development and testing, for release later in 2012.

Back to back dyno testing on Northampton Motorsport’s dyno by Peugeot specialist Pug1off has

shown (when used in conjunction with a suitable ECU remap) that the Cat Cams 4903106 profiles

produce exceptional power gains, in this case 26 bhp.

Crucially, both power and torque are improved throughout the rev range, with a 17 lb.ft peak torque

increase and 10-12 lb.ft extra at 4500 rpm, making this an ideal fast road upgrade.

During testing the peak power increased to 181 bhp at 7500 rpm, with over 175 bhp available from 6100 – 8000 rpm.

(NOTE: The stock car seemed down on power, producing 155 bhp but this could be as a result of the 145,000 mileage.)

As a result of the Cat Cams / Pug1off ECU remap package, peak torque increased to 150 lb.ft on the high mileage test car.

Ford’s 2.0-litre Duratec ST170 engine still has many fans, particularly for its ability to readily mate up to popular off the shelf rear wheel drive Ford transmissions.

Hence why Belgian performance valvetrain specialist Cat Cams is pleased to launch a new pair of profiles for track day or rally use, which are designed to work in

conjunction with either carburettors or independent throttle bodies.

Precision CNC ground from high quality, motorsport style steel billets, Cat Cam’s designers have leveraged their experience with BTCC and WTCC engines to

deliver a pair of profiles that deliver significant improvements in power and torque, while dispensing with the ST170’s variable valve timing (VVT) system, which

is superfluous for track day / motorsport use. However clever design work by Cat Cams allows the retention of the stock Ford front camshaft oil seals, which

normally fit around the Ford VVT drive sprockets.

It may not have caught the public’s imagination in the same way as the revered 205 GTi, but Peugeot’s 206 GTi seems to attract a loyal following, mainly because of their affordable pricing, availability and potential for modifications.

But with just 137 bhp on tap from its 1997cc EW10J4 engine, few would deny that the 1125 kilo 206 needs added urge to help it live up to the expectations of a GTi badge.

That said, the biggest problem with upgrading the 206 GTi at present is that there’s a huge gap in the engine tuning market between an affordable remap and an expensive, noisy and uneconomical independent throttle body conversion – something that Cat Cams is seeking to try and fill, with its ‘Sport’ fast road cam profiles for the EW10J4 motor.

Designed as a profile for everyday driving in all conditions, the Cat Cams ‘Sport’ cams – part number 4901613 - are produced with modest increases in valve lift and duration, in order to strike the right balance between driveability and performance. Cat Cams has also placed a great emphasis on ensuring that the standard road friendly idle characteristics are maintained.

Standard 206 GTi

A straight swap for the original equipment 206 GTi camshafts, the Cat Cams 4901613 profiles are CNC ground from fresh castings and are directly compatible with the standard Peugeot hydraulic followers.

Dyno testing has proven that in conjunction with an ECU remap (or piggyback ECU) to optimise the air / fuel ratio, the Cat Cams 4901613 profiles deliver a peak power increase of up to 23 bhp at just 5500 rpm.

Combined with the retention of the 206 GTi’s much praised low speed torque, the Cat Cams profiles greatly extend the cars usable power band, making the Peugeot not only noticeably quicker, but considerably more user friendly as well. Peak torque increases by up to 24 lb.ft up to 165 lb.ft, with over 150lb. ft available from 3750 to 5500 rpm, making the cams ideal for relaxed, rapid, fast road use.

And this extra performance is designed to be accessible to all Peugeot 206 GTi fans, so the Cat Cams 4901613 profiles are priced at just £475.87 including VAT @ 17.5%. For further information and sales advice please contact Cat Cams UK or your nearest Cat Cams dealer.

NOTE: These profiles also suit the 2.0-litre EW10J4 powered Citroën Xsara and C4, plus the Peugeot 206 CC, 206 GT and the 307 Sport.

An alternative pair of ‘Sport’ profiles, designed for the track day market and carrying part number 4901614 is also under development. They will be launched into the UK market in the next 2-3 months, featuring extra lift and duration on the inlet cam for increased top end power.

  • Developed in conjunction with Devil Developments

Turbo charging has long been a favoured route for tuners with the 2.0-litre ‘Silvertop’ Ford Zetec engine, as it delivers potentially large power gains as relatively low cost.

However one of the problems of bolting a turbo onto an engine originally designed as a normally aspirated unit is that the original camshafts are optimised for a standard non-turbo motor. Conversely, turbo engines have different cam timing requirements, so if the original cams are retained, ultimate performance will be compromised.

And the Ford Zetec is no exception, so, responding to demand, Belgian based performance valvetrain specialist Cat Cams has produced a set of profiles specifically designed for Zetec turbo use, tested in conjunction with Devil Developments of Littlehampton, Sussex.

Carrying part number 2290114, the profiles are designed with higher lift than the standard Zetec profiles and with greater duration on the inlet profile. On the exhaust side, the duration is reduced slightly to aid turbo spool up, greatly increasing response and mid-range torque.

Turbo, fast road

A like for like swap with the standard camshafts, the Cat Cams Ford Zetec turbo profiles are directly compatible with the standard Ford hydraulic valve gear. Back to back dyno testing has shown an 11 bhp improvement in peak power, with gains of up to 25 lb.ft of torque in the mid-range.

Priced at £428.85 including VAT @ 17.5%, the Cat Cams Ford Zetec turbo profiles are available now from Cat Cams UK.

As can be seen from the graph below. The mid range torque has been transformed. On the run with the new cams the boost pressure had dropped to 7psi (from 9psi on the std cams). If the wastgate had been tweaked to restore the boost pressure we would have expected to see approx 270bhp.

On the final run, with 14PSI of boost, the engine made just under 350bhp. Thats 100bhp more than when it arrived and the owner is very pleased with the results.

Advancing or retarding the cam timing is a well known technique used by engine builders to optimise the power and torque characteristics of any engine. Now Belgian performance valvetrain specialist Cat Cams is delighted to announce a new addition to its range of adjustable cam pulleys, for the popular 110bhp TU5JP4 1.6-litre 16-
valve engine used in the popular Citröen C2 VTS and the Peugeot 206.

Cat Cam’s True Lock adjustable cam pulleys offer a number of advantages over the traditional ‘vernier’ style items offered by rival companies. Primarily they are vastly more user friendly and accurate than traditional vernier pulleys. That’s because while rival designs rely on a sliding vernier scale to indicate how much cam advance or
retard has been dialled in, the True Lock pulleys use a unique, fool proof and considerably easier ‘pin and hole’ system.

The system is simple in operation – around the face of the True Lock pulley is a series of drilled holes representing one degree of cam advance or retard. Users simply have to undo the securing bolts, then rotate the two parts of the pulley until the supplied alignment pin slides into the desired hole. The pulley is then bolted back together, the locking pin is removed and the user can be confident that the cam timing is set accurately, without the need to align hard to see vernier scales. And with plus or minus ten degrees of advance and retard available, there is plenty of scope for serious adjustment.

Cat Cam’s True Lock pulleys also offer far greater strength than conventional vernier pulleys, because rather than relying on three easily rounded off allen screws for securing the two parts of the pulley, the True Lock pulleys use five 8mm bolts to provide a robust fixing mechanism that’s rigid and secure for very high torque
outputs.

This strength is also reflects on the materials used for the True Lock pulleys – they are machined from top quality 7075 aluminium billets and the outer cam wheel is hard anodised to ensure durability.

Cat Cam’s True Lock pulleys for the TU5JP4/L4 motor are available from all Catcams Dealers priced at £219.54 + Vat

Existing versions are also available for Peugeot 106 GTi and Citröen Saxo VTS.

BMW’s legendary small block six cylinder M20 engine is renowned for its strength and tuneability, so despite being out of production since 1994, demand for performance parts remains strong.

Which is why Belgian cam manufacturer Cat Cams has responded to market demands and launched a brand new ‘drop in’ performance cam profile for the 2-valve BMW M20 six cylinder engine, designed specifically for aftermarket turbocharger applications with all available capacity formats, from 2.0 to 2.7-litres.

Cat Cams has pioneered the use of high lift / short duration designs throughout motorsport, including the BTCC, European Rallycross and Moto GP. In this particular instance the requirements of an aftermarket turbocharger conversion mean that Cat Cams has focussed efforts on developing a profile that promotes rapid turbo spool up, hence the exhaust duration and lift are reduced in comparison to the four other profiles in Cat’s BMW M20 cams range.

Cat Cams delivers more power for the Clio 197 with latest cam profile launch

Belgian performance camshaft manufacturer Cat Cams is delighted to announce the launch of a new fast road ‘Sport’ cam profile for the popular RenaultSport Clio 197.

Developing a cam profile for the Clio 197 F4R 830 engine is something of a challenge because the valve to piston clearance is minimal, limiting the extra amount of lift available to extract additional performance.

Designed using unique, in-house developed software, the end result of Cat Cams work is a pair of mild negative radius ‘Sport’ profiles manufactured from bespoke, hollow steel billets and CNC ground to ensure accuracy.

These ‘Sport’ profiles are a direct replacement for the original units as well as being compatible with the Renault factory hydraulic followers and variable valve timing system. Ideally suited to Clio 197 engines using the stock ECU and inlet plenum, Cat Cam’s ‘Sport’ profiles retain decent idle quality and the driveability needed for fast road use.

Cat Cams has also incorporated an adjustable cam position sensor ring on the inlet camshaft, enabling easy timing adjustment without having to alter the cambelt position.

Initial dyno results show that Cat Cams Sport profiles produce a minimum of 5 bhp and 5lb.ft of torque, running in conjunction with the factory inlet and ECU.

The new Clio 197 ‘Sport’ cams carry the part number 5504402 and are available now, priced at £686.06 + Vat and delivery. For motorsport users five additional rally, rallycross and race profiles have been launched at the same time.

Belgain based Cat Cams, is delighted to launch a brand new range of performance camshaft kits designed for the popular SOHC Ford Pinto engine, in capacities from 1.3 to 2.0-litres. Cat Cam’s new Pinto kits are comprehensive, including Balinit C® coated cam followers and NASCAR quality PAC valve springs (where required.)

Although the Pinto engine design dates back to the 1960’s, through the application of 21stcentury cam design techniques and state of the art coatings technology, Cat Cams is confident that its new cam kit range can deliver an unrivalled spread of torque, combined with excellent top end power and superb reliability.

Eleven profiles are available, from a mild fast road grind to all out race cams, sharing the same design principles of high lift and short duration that have been successfully proven throughout motorsport, including the BTCC, European Rallycross and Moto GP. Forced induction fans will also be pleased to hear that a bespoke Pinto turbo profile is also part of the new range, running a bespoke exhaust profile to help ensure rapid turbo spool up.

Each Cat Cam Pinto profile is CNC ground from a high quality chilled cast iron blank to ensure accuracy and consistency. Similarly, the design of Cat’s Pinto cam follower is true to the original Ford blueprints, enabling Cat Cams to produce new followers that are checked on a computer controlled coordinate measuring machine to ensure the valve geometry is correct.

Crucially Cat Cams has overcome the traditional Pinto cam wear problem thanks to the application of a state of the art Oerlikon Balzer Balinit C® friction reducing coating (see attached graph) to the cam followers supplied with the kit. Balinit C’s® anti scuff properties mean that even Pinto engines running full race cams simply don’t wear out – this was proven in British short oval racing in 2008.

Due to the efficiency variations of inlet and exhaust systems Cat Cam’s policy is not to quote performance gains, but increases of 8-10% in power and torque are typical for ‘drop in’ fast road profiles, with much higher gains from the motorsport specific grinds which require other modifications to ensure compatibility.

Give your 2.0 & 2.3-litre Duratec a boost with Cat Cams – as used by Marcus Gronholm!

Lightweight, compact and highly tuneable, Ford’s first ‘world’ engine, the I4 Duratec, has already found plenty of fans in both 2.0 and 2.3-litre formats, particularly here in the UK, where the Duratec finds a home in the 150bhp Fiesta ST150 and the 160bhp Mazda MX-5.

Pleasingly the I4 Duratec responds very well to cam swaps, partly because the Mazda designed engine enjoys large ports and valves compared to most modern engines. And it’s this tendency that Belgian based Cat Cams can exploit for those seeking extra power and torque from their I4 Duratec engine for rally, rally cross and race applications, with its new range of motorsport profiles.

Cat Cams has pioneered the use of high lift / short duration profiles, enabling engines to produce an unmatchable spread of torque with excellent power characteristics, whatever the discipline. Indeed such is Cat Cams success with motorsport I4 Duratec profiles, they are used in Marcus Gronholm’s fearsome turbocharged European Rallycross Fiesta ST, which develops 552 horsepower and 600lb.ft of torque!

Cat Cams unleashes extra horses for Vauxhall / Opel C20XE engine

Vauxhall’s legendary C20XE 2.0-litre 16-v engine, also known as the ‘red top,’ is often the choice for tuning or transplant, into cars as diverse as Novas, Mantas and Mk1 Ford Escorts.

Hence why Belgian performance camshaft manufacturer Cat Cams has launched a full range of motorsport profiles for the evergreen C20XE engine, ranging from a rally profile that’s compatible with hydraulic tappets, to full race profiles designed for use with mechanical lifters.

Designed using unique, in-house developed software, Cat Cam’s C20XE profiles are manufactured from blank chilled iron castings and CNC ground to ensure accuracy. These profiles are available in gun drilled steel billet format on request.

Cat Cams has pioneered the use of high lift / short duration profiles, enabling engines to produce an unmatchable spread of torque with excellent power characteristics. The full part numbers and technical details of Cat Cam’s new C20XE motorsport cam profiles are thus:-
